   News You Can Use DISABILITY INSURANCE AWARENESS MONTH - May 2009 Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM) is an industry-wide campaign coordinated by non-profit Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE) designed to get American workers to think about the need to protect their greatest asset - their ability to earn an income. Becoming disabled and not being able to work is one of the greatest financial risks people face, and yet disability incurance continues to be one of the most overlooked and misunderstood types of insurance today. ARRA - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Update - March 2009 ARRA - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Update - March 2009ARRA provides premium assistance for certain individuals receiving COBRA continuation of health coverage. Eligible individuals pay only 35% of their COBRA premiums and the remaining 65% is reimbursed to the coverage provider through a tax credit. The premium assistance applies to periods of health coverage beginning on or after February 17, 2009 and lasts for up to 9 months. Under the ARRA, COBRA continuation coverage is defined as continuation coverage provided pursuant to ERISA (generally for private sectior employers with 20+ employees), the PUblic Health Sevice Act (for non-federal governmental employers with 20+ employees), Title 5 of the US Code (for federal employees), or under a State program that provides comparable continuation coverage (generally covering private employers with fewer than 20 employees). These state programs generally are referred to as state mini-COBRA programs. In order to be comparable, a State program must provide a right to continue coverage under an employer's group health plan that is substantially similar to what was provided when the individual was employed and at a monthly cost that is based on a specified percentage of the group health plan's cost of providing such coverage.
